Winter Pest Prep Part 2 –
Ways to Get Keep Your House Pest Free During the Winter Season
In our last blog, we started talking about steps that you can take to get your home winter ready and to prevent pests from setting up shop during these cold months. Pests like mice and rats are looking for a warm environment during these months, the same way that we are. Here are some additional steps that you can take to ensure that your home will not attract unwanted animals and insects:
Prepare Your Yard
You will want to move most objects away from your house. We recommend moving your firewood away from your house. This is a prime location for pests and moving it farther away discourages them from wanting to enter your home. You will also want to clean out your downspouts and gutters. Accumulation of leaves encourages more hiding places for pests. Please pull back the mulch from the siding of your house or foundations and do not store your trash cans directly up against your house. These simple steps to prep your yard will help keep your home safer from these animals.
Keep Water and Food Away
These pests will be looking for a source of water and food as well as a warm environment. Please check your plumbing to ensure that there are no leaks under your sinks or in your basements. There are ideal places for a rodent to find water. Also, you will want to put away your food. Leaving food out is almost like inviting a pest to enter your home and set up shop. Remember they that can quickly eat through thin plastic, so we recommend using durable storage containers or utilizing your refrigerator for items that could be appealing to mice or rats.
