Winter Pest Prep Part 1 – Ways to Get Keep Your House Pest Free During the Winter Season
Winter is coming. No, we are not talking about Game of Thrones. But we are coming up on the winter season, and the temperatures are dropping. It’s a great season to pull out the sweaters, drink warm beverages, and embrace being cozy during a cold day. But we are not the only ones that love to stay warm and enjoy a good meal in our houses. It also attracts various rodents and pests that live outside. They are also looking for an opportunity to stay warm and find food. It is estimated that 29% of pest invasions happen during this season and 50% of these happen through the kitchen. Before the season’s cold weather takes full effect, we recommend you take these steps to winter-proof your home against pests:
Close off any openings
Check your house for any openings or holes that a mouse or rat could get through. A mouse can squeeze through a hole that is the size of a dime while a rat can fit through a hole the size of a quarter. Look over the various windows and doors of your house and use caulking to close up any gaps. Make sure to check the foundations for any cracks. You will want to seal these right away. If you find a hole that caulking or cement will not be a good fit for, please stuff these holes with steel wool. If mice or rats try to chew through this, they will die. These kind of pests are much easier to deal with if you can catch the problem before they get into the house.
If you have any papers, cardboard boxes or various places that store trash, please go through this and throw them away. These places of clutter can become ideal hiding places for pests. They also will use these materials to build their nests, so getting rid of them helps immensely.
These are just two ways to help winter-proof your home to help keep pests away from your warm and cozy house. Please make sure to read our next blog to find out additional steps that you can take. You can also always call us at Pete’s Pest Control. We love to help keep your house pest free.
